Diabolos

Diabolos is an antagonist in Final Fantasy XIV, first appearing as the final boss in the level 50 dungeon, Lost City of Amdapor, and later in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward as the main antagonist in the "Shadow of Mhach" storyline.

History[]

Before Final Fantasy XIV[]

Diabolos was a powerful voidsent recognized by the Allagan Empire, who created a superweapon called the Diablo Armament to bind him and harness his power through Emperor Xande's pact with the void. However, the Diablo Armament was lost and buried under what became Bozja in the Third Umbral Calamity, with Diabolos himself escaping mostly intact.

During the War of the Magi in the Fifth Astral Era, High Voidmage Cessair was commissioned by her city of Mhach to summon Diabolos into their world. Cessair, who was opposed to the war, intended to use the threat of Diabolos to bring about a swift end to the conflict. Instead, the other voidmages ignored the restrictions she had carefully placed upon Diabolos and decided to use him to devastate the city of Amdapor. When Cessair protested, she was imprisoned as a traitor and the voidmages were free to induce Diabolos to share secrets of the void; he provided them with flawed instructions on how to summon and control a powerful voidsent, Scathach, the Shadow Queen, planning to take her power as his own. When Diabolos attacked Amdapor, however, the city's White Mages sealed him within their ruined city and he entered a deep sleep for the next 1500 years.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]

As the magicks that sealed Diabolos began to weaken, powerful dark forces began emanating from the ruins of Amdapor. E-Sumi-Yan and Raya-O-Senna send the Warrior of Light to the Lost City of Amdapor to investigate. Upon reaching the final chamber, Diabolos's seal broke. The voidsent seemed disoriented, confusing the Warrior's party for the White Mages who had sealed him, before attacking. Upon defeat, he stated that his long sleep had weakened him and he was not yet at his full power before disappearing, seemingly vanquished.

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]

The Warrior of Light teamed up with a a sky pirate named Leofard Myste and his band of Redbills to investigate a mysterious airship, dubbed the Void Ark, that had drifted through the skies for ages. On board, they were confronted by voidsent and met Diabolos again, who unleashed even more voidsent to attack the Warrior of Light and their companions.

FFXIV Diabolos Weeping City

Diabolos appears in the Weeping City of Mhach.

Though they defeated Diabolos's servants, they could not prevent him from taking a large, coffin-like artifact, and using the Ark's power to create a voidgate through which he escaped with it. The Warrior of Light and the Redbills learned of the Ark's history from the magical creature that had been guarding it: Cait Sith. The coffin-like object Diabolos had taken contained Scathach, whom Diabolos likely intended to revive.

When the Warrior of Light and the Redbills journeyed to The Weeping City of Mhach in search of the Nullstone, a powerful artifact that could be used against Scathach, Diabolos sent Ferdiad to retrieve it for him. After Ferdiad failed, he reported to Diabolos, who departed to finish the preparations for his coming plan.

The group pursued Diabolos to Dun Scaith, a forgotten town created by the people of Mhach as a refuge from the upcoming calamity of water. Diabolos had already awoken Scathach, and summoned several of her "hollow" servants (including Deathgaze Hollow). Once Scathach was defeated, Diabolos again challenged the adventurers, claiming they were no match for him now that he was at full power. When the Warrior of Light and their allies countered his Dark Messenger spell, he revealed his true purpose for reviving the Shadow Queen. He absorbed her, and used her power to transform into a much stronger form, called Diabolos Hollow. Despite his newfound strength, and his increasingly desperate pleas to the void for power, he was again defeated. He attempted to flee back into the void to regain his strength, but Leofard distracted him long enough for Cait Sith to regain the Nullstone and destroy the voidsent.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers[]

A remnant of Diabolos remained in the living world. When the IVth Imperial Legion of the Garlean Empire took to the field in Zadnor, they unearthed the Diablo Armament and placed it within the Dalriada under powerful bindings. The Garleans attempted to use it to intercept the encroaching Bozjan Resistance from taking the ship, but failed when the Resistance used their covertly installed D.A.M. system across Zadnor to implode their ships' ceruleum tanks.

The legion attempted a last stand while preparing to move the weapon away from the Resistance's hands. When the Resistance raided the Dalriada, the weapon, seemingly awakened by the combat, broke free and the remnant of Diabolos's mind emerged and again planned to release voidsent into the world. As the machine weakened, the armament's system override tried to suppress Diabolos's will as it went haywire destroying the ship from within. It smashed its way out and attempted to release its uncontrollable aether all at once, potentially destroying Zadnor and all present. Misija stopped it wielding the Save the Queen; the two clashed in an explosion that obliterated the Armament and left the Roegadyn mortally wounded.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Diabolos is a large, winged, demon-like entity, primarily red and black in color. As Diabolos Hollow, his body becomes bulkier and armored and grows a second pair of wings. His body gives off a bright orange glow. The unique green and red markings found on Scathath can be seen at the base of his wings and underneath his shoulder-like armor. When using Double Edge, he grows a four digit claw-like weapon from his right forearm.

Personality[]

Diabolos rarely speaks, and when he does it is to offer threats and intimidation to his enemies. He seems to be a leader among voidsent, as other powerful voidsent, such as Ferdiad, refer to him as "Lord Diabolos" and follow his command. He is confident in his abilities and is calculating enough to attempt to preemptively eliminate possible threats to his schemes. He loses his composure when confronting the Warrior of Light and is unable to understand how they can overpower him.

Gameplay[]

Diabolos is first fought as the final boss of The Lost City of Amdapor The Lost City of Amdapor and later as the final boss of Dun Scaith Dun Scaith, during which the takes on the form Diabolos Hollow.

Etymology[]

Diabolos is the Greek word for "devil". It has entered many languages to mean devil, such as Diabolus (Latin), Diavolo (Italian), Diablo (Spanish), Diable (French), and Diabo (Portuguese). Diabolos actually means "accuser" or "slanderer" and could also be connected to the Greek word diabolous, which means "divider" (which befits Diabolos's affinity with the gravity element in the Final Fantasy series), but eventually the general word Diabolos became the specific name of the entity. In the original Greek rendering, it was used to refer to the Christian Devil (The New Testament was written in Greek). Devil is the English translation of Diabolos and in Christian belief, this being is the embodiment of evil.

The concept of the Devil is believed to originate in Zoroastrianism with Angra Mainyu (also known as Ahriman) as well as from the Judaic Satan in the Book of Job in the Old Testament. Their Satan was merely the "devil's advocate", an angel who acted as a skeptic and whom God allowed to afflict Job with suffering. Satan is Hebrew for "prosecutor/accuser" or "adversary".

The concept of the summon Diabolos in Final Fantasy may be connected to the Jinn in Islamic mythology, similar to Ifrit. The djinn were the origins of genie myths and were spirits or ghosts made of fire or smoke. They were said to grant wishes.
