"Dark Messenger" is the theme that plays during the battle with Trance Kuja in Final Fantasy IX.
The song begins when the party enters the final confrontation with Kuja, following the defeat of Deathguise. It opens with a dramatic organ section. The slow-paced organ melody merges into the haunting beat of Kuja's signature theme. After an extremely fast-paced build up, the theme breaks out in a guitar riff. The piece then makes use of the familiar melody of Kuja's Theme, while elements of funk and rock can be heard in the background. At 2:13, the music changes, fading into a slower section that gives a feeling of sorrow.
This theme has also been included as a bonus BGM (Background Music) in Dissidia Final Fantasy, known as "The Darkness of Eternity". This is a reference to Necron, who introduces himself as such in Final Fantasy IX, and was known as "Eternal Darkness" in Japan. To acquire the song in Dissidia, Chaos must be defeated in Shade Impulse and the player must purchase it for 500 PP.
