The Da-chao Statue is a location in Final Fantasy VII, mentioned in "Episode INTERmission" of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Located in Wutai, is the name given to the monolithic sculpture sculpted into the mountain overlooking Wutai Village. Da-chao is the name of the Water God, Leviathan, and is said to protect the village along with the Five Mighty Gods.

The location is part of the chapter "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter" in Final Fantasy VII.

History[]

Da-chao was worshipped as one of the gods protecting Wutai. However, the defeat in the Wutai War shook many Wutaians' faith.[1]

In "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter", Don Corneo kidnapped both Yuffie Kisaragi and Elena and tied them to the face of one of the statues on the mountainside. Cloud Strife's party joined forces with the Turks to rescue the two.

Cloud and the group defeats Don Corneo's pet Rapps, but when Corneo threatened to send Yuffie and Elena plummeting down the mountain, Reno and Rude intervened, with Rude shooting Corneo with a silencer, causing the don to hang on the edge of the cliff. Reno asked Don Corneo questions in which the don could not answer, so Reno stepped on his fingers, causing him to fall off the cliffside. Reno got a call from Shinra to continue pursuing Cloud and his friends, but put the assignment off because they are still off duty.[2]

Geography[]

The Da-chao Statue is carved into the side of a large mountain overlooking Wutai Village. Carved in the sculpture are statues four humanoid figures. One of these somewhat resembles real-life statues of the Buddha (but wearing a crown with a unique design), one to its left resembles an oni, and another on the right resembles the typical Buddha sitting position. A path is carved to create a path throughout the sculpture, including up to outstretched hands.

Within the statue is a cave guarded by flames.

Society[]

Da-chao, the Water God, is worshipped by Wutaians as one of the deities protecting Wutai, along with the Five Mighty Gods (for whom the Pagoda of the Five Mighty Gods is built in honr of).[1]

Da-chao shares its name with the famous Da-chao beans exported by Wutaians. These beans are hard for teeth to crunch, meaning non-Wutaians have trouble eating them[3] while Wutaians are fond and view it as a point of pride.[4]

Gameplay[]

The Da-chao Statue is visited during the optional chapter "Homecoming of a Miserable Daughter". It is where the quest culminates, as after chasing Yuffie around the town, the party must then fight Rapps at the statue itself, with no Materia equipped.

A cave in the statue also contains many items. The Dragoon Lance for Cid can be found first, and returning to the cave with Leviathan Scales removes flames that blocks entry to a cave in the statue. This allows Steal as well Materia and the Oritsuru weapon for Yuffie to be obtained.

Musical themes[]

"Wutai" plays on the Da-chao Statue. "Don of the Slums" plays when Don Corneo makes his appearance.
