FFT Cyclops

Cyclops (クリュプス, Kuryupusu?) is one of the summons in Final Fantasy Tactics. It appears as a one-eyed, horned, purple giant. It attacks using a powerful non-elemental beam shot from its single eye. Cyclops was mistranslated in the American release of Final Fantasy Tactics as "Clops" when the spell is actually cast in combat, but the title is correct when selecting Cyclops in the Job skills menu.

This may be because the translator was confused by the original Japanese katakana, Kuryupusu (クリュプス), which is an alternative romanization of the Greek pronunciation Kuklōps (Κύκλωψ). 1,000 JP is required for a Summoner to learn Cyclops, and 62 MP to summon it. It has a speed of 12. Cyclops is one of the most powerful summons in Final Fantasy Tactics, and is perhaps only outscored in terms of power by Bahamut. Cyclops has a 10% chance of randomly being learned in battle by a Summoner who has not yet learned it and is not KO'd by it, or absorbs at least 1 HP worth of damage. Nullifying the damage does not count.

When summoned in the PS version, there are chances the Summoner will chant, "Scatter frozen blades of air! Clops!".

During the battle with Belias at Riovanes Castle, the Lucavi is able to summon Cyclops.

EtymologyEdit

[view  · edit  · purge]In Greek mythology, cyclopes (the plural form of cyclops) is a race of giants, having but a single round eye on their forehead. They were said to be children of other mythological beings, such as the gods, nymphs, and even the Earth itself. Skilled blacksmiths, the cyclopes sometimes made weapons for the gods, most famous of these being the thunderbolts of Zeus.
