FFIX Cure

Cure in Final Fantasy IX.

Cure (ケアル, Kearu?, lit. Care), also called Cure1, Cure 1, or Healcast, is a recurring spell from the Final Fantasy series. Cure is the most basic of White Magic spells and restores a small amount of HP.

Since its appearance at the start of the series, Cure has appeared in almost every series title as a magic ability. It is generally the first spell a White Mage learns in titles. In addition, jobs such as the Red Mage, Knight, Paladin, and Devout can utilize Cure.

Description
Cure XIV

A White Mage using Cure in Final Fantasy XIV.

Cure serves as the base form of healing magics, restoring a small amount of HP to targets. It is often considered a holy or light-elemental ability in most titles, but some titles give it the unique restorative element. Cure and its stronger variants can be used to inflict damage on the undead.

In all titles featuring the spell, Cure includes upgraded forms with their names deriving from the series's recurring Magic tier system. The following are some of the recurring upgraded tiers:

  • Cura (ケアルラ, Kearura?, lit. Carera) - Serves as the second tier of Cure, often being double the potency of its predecessor. In later titles, Cura restores HP to multiple targets within an area of effect.
  • Curada (ケアルダ, Kearuda?, lit. Careda) - Serves as the third tier of Cure in titles featuring four tiers. It restores more than both its predecessors. Starting from Final Fantasy V, Curada would be excluded. Later titles that include the spell would often have it act as a single target version of Curaga, or give it the unique property of restoring HP based on the amount of health missing. Some localizations of titles have referred to this spell as Curaga.
  • Curaga (ケアルガ, Kearuga?, lit. Carega) - Serves as the third or fourth tier, it is often the strongest form of potency influenced Cure magics, restoring a large amount of HP to targets. Starting from Final Fantasy V, Curaga would often serve as the third tier of Cure magic, with only a handful of titles featuring an upgraded tier. Some localizations have referred to this spell as Curaja.
  • Curaja (ケアルジャ, Kearuja?, lit. Careja) - Serves as the fourth or fifth tier of Cure magic. It was first introduced in Final Fantasy Tactics as the upgraded form of Curaga. Curaja often restores a massive amount of HP to multiple targets, while occasionally also bestowing extra beneficial effects.
  • Curasa (ケアルア, Kearua?, lit. Carea) (Cura in some titles) - Originally served as the second tier of Cure in the first Final Fantasy, being replaced by the recurring Cura spell starting from Final Fantasy III. The spell would reemerge as an entirely unique form of Cure in the Final Fantasy XIII subseries of games. Curasa restores HP to a single target proportional to the amount of damage they have taken. Its upgraded area-of-effect version is Curaja.
  • Full Cure (フルケア, Furu Kea?, lit. Full Care) - Serves as the ultimate form of Cure magic. It was first introduced in Final Fantasy VII. As its name suggest, the spell fully restores a single ally to 100% HP. Full Cure also includes some of the additional properties in later titles - targeting multiple party members, removing negative statuses, reviving fallen party members, or serving as a Limit Break-esque move.
FFX-2 Moogle Cure

Moogle Cure from Final Fantasy X-2.

In addition, several titles have featured unique or alternate upgraded forms for Cure. These spells include unique properties, or are used by specific jobs:

  • Choco Cure (チョコケアル, Choko Kearu?, lit. Choco Care) - A unique version of Cure used exclusively by Chocobos in several titles. It often restores a moderate amount of HP to a target.
  • Cure I - XVI (ケアルLv.1 - ケアルLv.16, Kearu Lv.1 - Kearu Lv.16?, lit. Care Lv.1 - Care Lv.16) - Due to the unique progression system of Final Fantasy II, Cure levels up like all other magics. There are sixteen versions of Cure, having increased potency with each level, while also having unique animations every four levels.
  • Moogle Cure (モグケアル, Mogu Kearu?, lit. Mog Care) - An upgraded Cure spell that exclusively appears in Final Fantasy X-2 as a Kupo! spell for Yuna's Mascot dressphere. This version of Cure restores a percentage based amount, while also removing negative status effects. Its upgraded form is Moogle Cureja (モグケアルジャ, Mogu Kearuja?, lit. Mog Careja).
  • Cure II - Cure VI (ケアルII - ケアルVI, Kearu II - Kearu VI?, lit. Care II - Care VI)- Upgraded forms of Cure that exclusively appear in Final Fantasy XI. Due to the -ra and -ga tiers in the title being used exclusively for area-of-effect versions, Cure serves as a single target healing spell, with its upgraded version using Roman numerals to signify their enhanced rank.
  • Vercure (ヴァルケアル, Varukearu?, lit. Vercare) - A unique version of Cure that appears as a Red Mage spell action in Final Fantasy XIV.
  • Pom Cure (ポンポンケアル, Ponpon Kearu?, lit. Pompom Care)- A unique version of Cure for the Blue Mage job in Final Fantasy XIV, being a Moogle version of the White Mage's Cure spell.

Chrono Trigger Cure

Cure in Chrono Trigger.

While Cure is a common name for healing spells among the RPG genre, the Final Fantasy version of the spell has appeared outside the series as a magic ability in several other Square Enix titles.

Cure's first appearance outside of the series would be in the first three entries of the SaGa series (known as the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy in the west) as Cure/Cure 1. The third entry would also include Cure2 (ケアルラ, Kearura?, lit. Carera) and Cure3 (ケアルガ, Kearuga?, lit. Carega). The Japanese-exclusive 3D remake of the third title includes the aforementioned spells, but also adds Full Cure as the final tier.

Cure also appears in Chrono Trigger as the default healing magic tech for Marle, restoring a moderate amount of HP to a target. In addition, Marle and Frog learn its upgraded form, Cure II (ケアルガ, Kearuga?, lit. Carega). Both spells also appear in the Chrono series's spiritual successor, I Am Setsuna, as spritnite abilities for Setsuna, even carrying over the same tier suffixes in Japanese.

Cure, along with Cura and Curaga, appear as magic commands in the Kingdom Hearts series. Cure is often a single target restorative spell in most entries, but Kingdom Hearts II and III have the spell function as a group-wide heal. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep also features a unique version of Cure known as Group Cure (フレンドケアル, Furendo Kearu?, lit. Friend Care), which heals multiple party members for the purpose of multiplayer gameplay. In addition, Kingdom Hearts III features a more powerful form of Cure known as Curaza (ケアルガン, Kearugan?, lit. Caregun).

Bravely Default - Cure

Cure is featured as a recurring White Magic spell in the Bravely series, serving as the basic healing spell. The spell is naturally usable by White Mages in all titles, but titles associated with the first Bravely Default have allowed the Red Mage and Spiritmaster jobs to have natural access to the spell. Cure is also joined by its upgraded forms - Cura, Curada, and Curaga.

Cure from Adventures of Mana (the remake of Final Fantasy Adventure) also appeared in the defunct mobile title, Heavenstrike Rivals, serving as the ability for the Heroine cameo unit.

In the mobile strategy RPG Dragon Quest Tact, Cure is known naturally by Moogles at level 1. It restores a minor amount of HP to either itself or an ally up to two squares away from it.

Non-Square Enix titles[]

Cure has also made cameo appearances or has been referenced in some titles not associated with Square Enix. The Abyssean Horde uses the Final Fantasy XI version of Cure during its harder boss encounters in Granblue Fantasy, allowing it to restore its own HP.

Influences in other titles[]

Chrono Trigger's sequel, Chrono Cross, includes Cure as the first Blue Element healing tech, which restores a small amount of HP to a party member. Despite sharing the same name in English, the Japanese name for the ability is spelled as (ケア, Kea?, lit. Care), as opposed to the Final Fantasy (ケアル, Kearu?, lit. Care), however both spell names are inspired by the katakana for the English word of Care. The game also features two upgraded forms, Cure Plus (ケアラ, Keara?, lit. Carera) and Cure All (ケアレスト, Kearesuto?, lit. Care Rest).

Behind the scenes[]

Although called Cure in English, the Japanese name of the spell more likely derives from the English word Care. The English word "care" is standardly transliterated into Japanese as ケア (kea?).

The powered-up spell, Renew/Full Cure, is known as フルケア (Furu Kea?, lit. Full Care) in Japanese, choosing to drop the (ru?) to stick to the four-character Japanese naming scheme. Abilities that are derived from the English word "cure" (キュア, kyua?) appear in Mix commands and deal more with removing statuses at the same time (e.g. Cure Blind).
