Curasa from FFXIII

Curasa in Final Fantasy XIII.

Curasa (ケアルア, Kearua?, lit. Carea), also known as Cura, is a recurring healing spell in Final Fantasy series. It is an upgrade of the single target Cure spell, with its effects varying on each title it appears in.

The spell is often associated with the White Mage job from the first Final Fantasy and the Medic role from the Final Fantasy XIII subseries of games.

Overview[]

Cura from Final Fantasy.

In all appearances, Curasa often heals a larger amount than the basic Cure spell. Curasa originally served as the second tier of the base Cure White Magic in the first Final Fantasy, being known as Carea (ケアルア, Kearua?) in all versions of the game in Japanese, this due to the first title using the -a (, a?) suffix exclusively for second tier White Magics. When the tier system reemerged in Final Fantasy III, White Magics from that point onward adopting the -ra (, ra?) suffix for their second tiers like their Black Magic counterparts, with Cura serving as the recurring second tier onward. The newer English releases of Final Fantasy use the name Cura to remain consistent with the recurring tier system introduced in the localization of Final Fantasy VIII.

Curasa would eventually reemerge in the series in Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels as recurring spell for the Medic role. While Cura served as the party-wide version of Cure, Curasa now served as a parallel to Cure, being the base form of the proportional healing spells, allowing the caster to restore HP to a single target proportional to amount of damage the target has taken.
