The Crimson Squad was an elite group intended to surpass the Crusaders introduced in Final Fantasy X-2. The best members of the squad would then be assigned leaderships of various groups of Crusaders all across Spira. Notable candidates for the squad include Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal, with Paine as the group's recorder. The name is likely derived from Crimson Blades, the original name of the Crusaders.
The group was led by Maester Wen Kinoc. He probably assembled the Squad and started to train people willing to join "elite" forces of Yevon. In order for the recruits to be officially assigned as members of Crimson Squad, they needed to investigate the Den of Woe as strange things started to occur there.
The Crimson Squad dissolved after an incident in the cave, which resulted in the death of all the candidates, except for the previous four mentioned. The player is able to uncover the incident by gathering the recordings made by Paine, called "Crimson Spheres", from when she was the group's recorder. If the player succeeds in collecting all ten spheres, they will be able to enter the Den of Woe and uncover even more of Paine's past and the truth of what happened.
