For the location from Final Fantasy VI, see Crescent Island.

Crescent is a village in Final Fantasy V located on a small island. It is located above Ronka Ruins (specifically the Ronkan Catapult), which are powered by the earth crystal. As such, its soil is always fertile, even when not cared for.

To the west of the village lies a doorway to a new airship, which is later covered by a tower the party must traverse to reach the doorway again. To the south lies the black chocobo's forest (in Bartz's world) and to the south-west lies the Phantom Village (in the merged world).

History[]

Fire-Powered Ship Sinking

The Fire-Powered Ship sinking.

Crescent was situated above the Ronkan Catapult, making it connected to the earth crystal. Following an earthquake a whirlpool formed, which frequently sucked in ships that arrived at the village, something that the visitors found to be a common occurrence. Presumably unaware of the Catapult below, they did not connect the frequent earthquakes to the earth crystal.[1]

Bartz Klauser's party first reached the island aboard the fire-powered ship, but upon arriving in the town of Crescent, a whirlpool swallowed the ship into the Catapult. The party headed to the chocobo forest nearby, since there had been sightings of a rare black chocobo there. After finding the chocobo, Bartz tried to ride it, only to find he could fly. After investigating the chocobo, the Warriors of Light found two crystal shards from the fire crystal, which held the jobs of Bard and Ranger.[2]

The party later discovered that Crescent lay above the Ronkan Catapult. When the earth crystal was destroyed, the soil of the village began to degrade and slowly become infertile due to the lack of energy in the ground.[1]

Geography[]

Crescent is located on an island simply referred to as Crescent Island,[3] which is directly above the Ronkan Catapult.[4] The island is southeast on the map, and true to its name, is shaped like a crescent moon. The island also connects to the east and west continents through archipalegos in Bartz's world, which in the merged world, form very long, thin stretches of land connecting them. Crescent is noted to have frequent earthquakes that cause whirlpools shortly after, sucking in ships. Additionally, the earth crystal improves the soil of the village, meaning its absence later caused the soil to degrade.[1] To the south of the village is the black chocobo forest.

The town is fairly quiet and peaceful, with few walls or defenses in comparison to other towns found around the world. It has a few shops, an inn, a water fountain, and the house of a bard named Minstrel. The proximity to the black chocobo forest mean many residents take interest in chocobos, and the proximity to Phantom Village meant many heard rumors of its existence when the worlds merged.[1]

Quests[]

After visiting the town once, following which the fire-powered ship sinks, everything else in Crescent is optional, and the main quest is to find songs.

The party leader can play a piano at the bard's house. This is the fifth piano the player is likely to encounter, and if the player played all the previous ones, the party leader will play an excerpt from Schubert's "Marche Militaire No. 1". Talking to the bard after playing the piano will reward the Mighty March song.

If the player played at least seven pianos in the world, they can acquire Sinewy Etude from the bard after playing the piano again. The tune is an excerpt from Mozart's "Rondo Alla Turca". The party can learn Sinewy Etude in the merged world.

Playing all eight pianos in the world (the tune is excerpt from Debussy's "Arabesque No. 1") acquires the last song, Hero's Rime, after showing the newfound pianist skills to the bard.

The party's Blue Mage can also learn two new Blue Magic spells from the world map areas around Crescent:

Etymology[]

The name refers to the shape of the island. In art and symbolism, a crescent is the shape produced when a circular disk has a segment of another circle removed from its edge so that what remains is a shape enclosed by two circular arcs of different diameters which intersect at two points (usually in such a manner that the enclosed shape does not include the center of the original circle). In astronomy, a crescent is the shape of the lit side of a spherical body (most notably the Moon) that appears to be less than half illuminated by the Sun as seen by the viewer.

The word crescent is derived from the present participle of the Latin verb crescere, "to grow", and was originally applied to the form of the waxing moon.
