The Cockatrice is an enemy in the game Final Fantasy XII. It is found in various areas throughout the Dalmasca Estersand and in the northern Dalmasca Westersand, where it is much stronger. It is more difficult to defeat than the Wolves and Cactites which inhabit the same areas.

"Lo, the mighty cockatrice, proud-feathered sphere, known as much for its ill humor as its dire rotundity. The great naturalist Merlose once remarked: '...live they in the sands and other arid climes, whereabouts they moveth in a rolling fashion most peculiar. Subsist they principally on small creatures and vermin &c., for the incapacitation of which they disgorge a sticky saliva, thence devouring captured morsels only when appetite moves them.' Swollen sacs containing airs are found under the surface of the skin, and when inflated, these lifting the creature upon drafts unseen, whence to espy suitable prey."

"A legendary cockatrice feather with a brilliant white sheen. Touching the feather, you feel a strange bond with the cockatrices..."

Non-hostile cockatrice are found reared by the nomads of Giza Plains. While they don't look it, they are in fact intelligent creatures. The cockatrice tongue can only be spoken and understood with the key item Feather of the Flock. One side quest revolves around using this to communicate with them. Surprisingly, the tame cockatrices speak using the British Cockney speech.

At one point, the cockatrices of the nomads fled the settlement. The player must retrieve the key item to communicate with the cockatrices and coax them to return to the nomad village. The Feather of the Flock is retrieved from the Track of the Beast area of the Giza Plains, only accessible during the Rains. An urn at the south-east corner contains this Key Item, and once the player has this, it will remain in the inventory. Using this Key Item, all six cockatrices;

• Sassan in Dalmasca Estersand's South Bank Village,
• Renn in Rabanastre,
• Shurry in Jahara, Land of the Garif,
• Chit in Eruyt Village,
• Agytha in the Imperial City of Archades,
• Mume in Balfonheim Port Chocobo stables,

will then return to the nomad settlement.
