The Coal Train is a vehicle in Final Fantasy VII. It travels travels along a track that leads from the mako reactor in Mt. Corel to North Corel.

The trains are used to transport a Huge Materia during the game's events.

History[]

The train may date back to the days of the town of Corel, when the town was a coal mining town.

In "Struggle for the Huge Materia", the Shinra Electric Power Company attempted to transport a Huge Materia from the Corel Reactor it Mt. Corel, for their plan involving crashing the Huge Materia into Meteor. A party led by Cid Highwind captured the train and worked to stop it traveling to North Corel. However, due to the trains' confusing controls, it sped up rapidly, endangering North Corel.

Characteristics[]

The lengthy train has a large number of cars, suggesting its ability to transport a large amount of cargo.

The train is capable of traveling up to speeds at which it could destroy the town of North Corel if not stopped.

Gameplay[]

The Coal Train is only briefly visited for "Struggle for the Huge Materia". During the quest, Cid is a required party member; though not required, bringing Barret along unlocks extra dialogue back at North Corel. The chase for the Coal Train begins in Mt. Corel.

Depending on player performance during the quest, there three possible outcomes:

  • If the player successfully reaches the train and stops it before it hits North Corel, the town is saved and residents thank the party, becoming more hopeful about their future. The Ultima Materia is granted for free by a boy in North Corel.
  • If the player reaches the train but cannot stop it, North Corel is destroyed, and the Huge Materia is lost. Ultima can be bought from the boy for 50,000 gil.
  • If the player was unable to reach the train, the Huge Materia is lost and Ultima is missed unless the player obtains the Huge Materia later in the rocket.

Regardless of outcome, Catastrophe becomes available in North Corel thereafter.

Musical themes[]

"Hurry!" plays on the train. "Hurry Faster!" plays when Cid tries to pull the brakes.
