Etymology[]

Chameleons are a clade of old world lizards that come in a range of colors, and many species have the ability to change color. Chameleons are distinguished by their zygodactylous feet, long and extrudable tongues, swaying gait, and crests on their heads. Most species also have a prehensile tail. Chameleons' eyes are independently mobile. Chameleons are adapted for climbing and visual hunting. They are found in warm habitats that range from rain forest to desert conditions. The American English word chameleon is a simplified spelling of Latin chamaeleōn, a borrowing of the Greek χαμαιλέων (khamailéōn), a compound of χαμαί (khamaí) "on the ground" and λέων (léōn) "lion".

The name of the robe refers to the chameleon's ability to blend into its surroundings by changing color.
