FFXIII-2 Snow the Cat

Cat in Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Cats are recurring animals in the Final Fantasy series. Less common than dogs, common house cats have appeared as pets and background elements in populated areas. Feline beings at times appear as monsters, summons, and other magical beings, such as Gimme Cat in Final Fantasy IX and Cait Sith. Mithra is a humanoid race with catlike features in Final Fantasy XI, whereas Miqo'te is a humanoid race with cat ears in Final Fantasy XIV. However, this article focuses on cats as regular animals.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy VII[]

There's a large beckoning cat by the Pharmacy in Wall Market.

Calico cat.

On the second floor of the Barracks in Upper Junon, cats of both types can be found on the bed in the top right if the player visits pre-Meteorfall. The orange-brown cat sits curled, while the calico cat walks back and forth and meows. After Meteor is summoned, three more smaller cats of various sizes and descriptions occupy the room.

The Corel flashback has a comedy routine that goes on in the background. A cat appears behind one house being followed by a dog before disappearing behind another house. The cat then emerges from that house and returns from whence it came, being followed by the dog who is now being followed by a small child. Then back down the original route the small child runs, now being chased by both animals.

Dark cat.

Cat's House in Wutai has an HP Absorb Materia upstairs, but the path to it is blocked by cats until after Yuffie's quest has been completed. The passage upstairs has another cat, although it cannot be seen by the box and its presence is only made known when it meows on contact. The house contains 11 cats, and unique to this house are some darker appearing cats who use a shaded version of the orange-brown cat model.

At Icicle Inn, the Family House has an orange-brown cat. At first it is in the way of the snowboard until after the scene with Elena, where talking to the boy will get his cat to move to allow the player to pick up the snowboard. In Holzoff's House, an orange-brown cat sits camouflaged on the carpet.

Ginger cat.

A couple of cats appear in the Accessory Store in Mideel.

The Bird room of the Debug Room has an orange-brown cat that deals with areas concerning Junon.

Cait Sith's Lucky Girl Limit Break also features a catgirl.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Cats make their home in the Midgar slums, numerous being found around Sector 7. A girl called Betty tasks Cloud Strife with finding her lost cats in an odd job called "Lost Friends"; though the cats flee as Cloud tries to approach them, they return to their owner and Cloud collects his reward regardless. Wedge also cares for numerous cats. The slum dwellers talk about "someone in the neighborhood watch who is a real cat whisperer", and he once invites Cloud to visit him so he can "meet all his cats". There is also cat graffiti in the Collapsed Expressway Cat graffiti in the Bandits Den of the Collapsed Expressday from FFVII Remake.

Cats on a fence from FFVII Remake

Three cats on a fence; one has a much higher fidelity model than the others.

Sector 7 undercity has numerous stray cats. Co-director Motomu Toriyama has explained that their numbers can be attributed to Wedge who loves cats so much he cannot help but bring any stray he finds back home with him. The other co-director Naoki Hamaguchi (game design / programming) had his own cat rendered in-game, as during development a cat with a rough model appeared during a scene, and Hamaguchi, who loves cats, thought they could not release the game "like this", and gave the modelers a picture of his own cat, which led to the addition of a high quality cat model being in the game. The scene at Jessie's parents' house has three cats walking on the fence, and the detailed American Shorthair among them is Hamaguchi's cat.[1] Because that cat model ended up so detailed, cutscene makers wanted to use it in various places, but Hamaguchi wanted it only living in Upper Sector 7. The model of Hamaguchi's cat at one point was even included as one of Wedge's three his cats, but Hamaguchi made Toriyama change it as Wedge's cats are supposed to be siblings and thus should look like they are from the same litter.[1] Toriyama, meanwhile, did not want dog people left out, and added some more dogs to Midgar, which is why Marle—the landlord of Stargazer Heights—has one.[2] Level design supervisor Yui Sawada stated that the team tried to select cats that looked like they could be found anywhere, avoided long-haired breeds that looked really fancy. The cat's animations were left up to the motion team, whom Sawada felt must have been huge cat lovers, given the surprising number of variations they created.[3]

In "Episode INTERmission", Yuffie will find the newsletter she is looking for for "The Happy Turtle Ad Campaign" quest in the clutches of a cat, all of whom are playing with flyers.

The Winhill pub has a cat that is part of the vase sidequest. After finding the other pieces, the player must speak to the lady upstairs till she mentions the flowers' aroma. Alley cats are found in Alexandria and Treno. At the beginning of the game the player can find a boy named Tom down at the docks near the church who asks Vivi to find his missing cat, Mittens. The cat at Luca's city limits (and also a dog) awaits the return of a Crusader who fights during Operation Mi'ihen. The cat in Macalania Temple moves around when interacted with and sometimes lets out a cry.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

No specific cats appear, but NORA's motif is a cat, hence the cat-themed jewelry Serah Farron wears, a gift from her boyfriend Snow Villiers who leads NORA.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

There are cats inside Perpetouss Keep during the "Adventurer from Another World" quest. The talk icon appears when near them, but the player cannot further interact with them. During the ending credits to the quest, Y'jhimei lies on the ground with a cat sitting on her back and Prompto may take a photo of this scene for the player's album.

Before the game was out, developers demoed Lestallum via a "dog cam", exploring the town as Umbra. Another studio Square Enix had outsourced some of the work to did their own demo in the vein of "cat cam", showing a train station from a cat model's point of view. This train station doesn't appear in the final game.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light[]

Aire as a cat
Rekoteh as a cat

The player can transform Aire into a white cat and Rekoteh into a blue cat with the Animal Staff. Characters who enter battle in animal form retain their items and commands, but their weapons are not visible and stats are decreased. As animals, the player can converse with the non-playable animals found in towns, such as the seagulls in Liberte.

Aire is a spoiled princess who seeks treasure in a nocturnal whirlpool. When she opens the chest, she is cursed into becoming a cat and she discovers that only animals and fairies can understand her. Wanting to become human again, Aire heads to Arbor. She teams up with her friend, Brandt, who takes her for an ordinary cat. As soon as they set foot in Arbor, Brandt is turned into a plant, and Aire must save him by retrieving the Animal Staff. Aire and Brandt meet with Queen Arbor and agree to calm Arbaroc, Arbor's guardian, from a rampage. In exchange, the Queen turns them back into humans. Meanwhile, Aire's friend, Jusqua, has found a stray cat he believes to be the cursed Aire, and tries to expel the "curse" from the cat.
