Carbuncle is an optional boss in Final Fantasy V. It can be encountered in Castle Exdeath. In the 10th floor skull-tiles cover the room. If the party steps onto the northmost one, they will teleport to an inaccessible spot where Carbuncle is. There is a flight of stairs below if the party doesn't want to fight him. Defeating him wins Carbuncle, a Level 4 Summon. It is suggested that you fight him now because after defeating Exdeath in the castle, the party will be warped to the merged world and you cannot come back to fight him again.

[edit] Strategy

Carbuncle has the Auto-Reflect ability, so all magic cast against him will be bounced back to the caster. If you do wish to cast magic, then bounce spells off of one of your own party members with Reflect on them. Otherwise, physical attacks do decent damage against Carbuncle. Zeninage/GilToss works well if you're rich enough, but if you stick to physical attacks and Spellblade Carbuncle should fall. In fact, in the Anthology version, attacking Carbuncle with a Bio Spellblade will cause an instant win. Summoning Catoblepas will also defeat Carbuncle instantly.
