Cait Sith, also known as Stray in the SNES release, is an esper in Final Fantasy VI who can be acquired as a magicite.

Profile[]

Cait Sith is a black-and-white cat who walks confidently and stands upright. He wears red shoes, white gloves, and a green cape.

Story[]

Cait Sith was one of several espers captured by the Gestahlian Empire during their first raid on the esper world. The captive espers were taken back to the Magitek Research Facility at Vector and experimented on and their magic drained to develop the Empire's Magitek army.

At an unknown point, Ramuh attempted escape with Cait Sith, Kirin and Siren, but only Ramuh survived. He kept the magicite remains of his comrades with him as he went into hiding at Zozo. When the Returners met Ramuh while searching for Terra, Ramuh urged them to shut down the Magitek Research Facility and free the espers still held captive. To aid them in this, he turned himself into magicite and entrusted himself and the three magicites of his comrades to them.

Obtained[]

Cait Sith is obtained during the main story. It is granted by Ramuh, and afterwards can be permanently used.

Gameplay[]

Cat Rain from FFVI Pixel Remaster

(Pixel Remaster).

Cait Sith costs 28 MP to summon. It uses Cat Rain, which casts Confuse on all enemies with a hit rate of 128. On level up, it provides a +1 boost to Magic to the user.

Cait Sith is not terribly useful as a summon; Edgar's Noiseblaster has the same effect for no MP cost, and there are not many circumstances where it would be preferable to confuse multiple enemies over using a damaging esper. Its stat boost is useful for allowing early stat training in Magic before the player completes the Magitek Research Facility and acquires Zona Seeker, which gives a +2 Magic boost.

Spells[]

Cait Sith's spells are circumstantially useful in the next dungeon after obtaining it, the Magitek Research Facility. Imp has its usefulness against the boss Number 024, and Float is useful when fighting the Cranes, who can use Magnitude 8; Float will make the party immune. Cait Sith is the only way for characters to learn Confuse, which has a few uses throughout the game.

Etymology[]

The cat-sìth (plural cait-shìth), meaning "fairy cat" in Scottish Gaelic and pronounced "caught shee", is a fairy creature from Celtic mythology, said to resemble a large black cat with a white spot on its breast. Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. The Irish word cat sí literally translates to "mound cat", referencing the fairy forts commonly held to house fairies of all kinds. English speakers may be familiar with its usage in the term "banshee", from Irish bean sí.

The legends surrounding this creature are more common in Scottish folklore, but a few occur in Irish. Some common folklore suggested that the cat-sìth was not a fairy, but a witch who could transform into a cat and back up to nine times. After the ninth transformation, they would be unable to return to human form. This is speculated to be the origin of the proverb "a cat has nine lives", as opposed to some other number.

A stray cat is a homeless or wandering cat.
