Only 3 HP, but incredibly good defenses. Attacks with a needly Blow Fish.

Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Cactuar, also called Cactrot, is an enemy in Final Fantasy VI. They appear in the desert near Maranda.

In the Advance, mobile and Steam releases, killing ten Cactuars will lure out the Gigantuar. However, the player must first speak to a man in Maranda, who mentions encountering the monster.

Battle

The Cactuar uses a turn "bundling up something...", before using 1000 Needles. After repeating this script for six turns, the message "Workload increases tenfold!" may appear, after which the Cactuar will cast ten 1,000 Needles in a row, dealing a total of 10,000 HP damage.

Cactuars have extremely high Defense and Evade.

The Cactuars are useful for learning magic, as they give 10 AP when defeated.

Strategy

It is advised to use attacks that are unblockable and ignore Defense, such as Bushido, Tools, and Blitz. Alternatively, the player can equip a Sniper Eye to ensure their attacks connect, and use the Ultima Weapon, and Ultima spells. If Strago is in the party, using his 1000 Needles Lore will always hit.

Gogo should be equipped with a Master's Scroll, a Ribbon/Peace Ring, and the most powerful weapon available. An alternative setup would be Gogo with a Master's Scroll, Hermes Sandals or Gale Hairpin, and the most powerful weapon available.

For the versions prior to the Game Boy Advance, the player should use Gogo with a Sniper Eye, Merit Award, and a defense-ignoring weapon, such as Valiant Knife or Ultima Weapon, Dice, or Fixed Dice. An alternative setup would be Gogo with a Master's Scroll and Sniper Eye, as it will allow Gogo to deal four attacks with one point of damage each, enough to defeat Cactuar's three HP.

Etymology

Sabotender (サボテンダー, Sabotendā?) is derived from mixing the Japanese word for cactus (サボテン, saboten?) and the English word "pretender" (プリテンダー, puritendā?).

Trivia

  • In the online game Roblox, the player can purchase a hat called "Catcrot." The hat's description is, "Desert, South of Miranda. World of Ruin. Watch out for Blow Fish."
