The Butterfly Hunt is a minigame in Final Fantasy X. It can be found in Macalania Woods, available to be played from the first time there. Shortly after arriving in Macalania, you will come across a bird-like creature with a harp near a butterfly who will tell you about the game, in a bit of a riddle. To start the game, find and touch one of the rainbow colored butterflies scattered throughout the woods. Several can be found, each triggering the minigame in that particular section.
[edit] The Rules
The rules are fairly simple. Collect the blue butterflies while avoiding the red ones. When you start the game, somewhere on the screen a transparent ghost chest will appear. Each time you collect a blue butterfly, the chest becomes more and more corporeal. Collect all seven within the time limit and the chest becomes solid, with your prize inside. Sounds simple enough, but there are a few things that are important to know first.
- Once you start, all random encounters are suspended. Even after the event is over, win or lose, random encounters will remain suspended until you leave that area.
- Touching a red butterfly will cause it to summon a battle comprised of the fiends found in Macalania Woods. However, they are twice as tough and these battles cannot be escaped from. Be careful.
- Touching a red butterfly also causes you to lose a few seconds of time as you bend down to pick it up before the battle starts.
- Once the event is over, you must leave that area and return to reset the puzzle. Be careful though, if you managed to collect all seven butterflies but accidentally leave the area before collecting your prize, it will vanish and you must try again.
- If you run out of time, you lose. When this happens, you are transported back to where you started. If you win, you remain where you are.
