Final Fantasy VI PlayStation Bestiary entry

The Blue Dragon, formerly called Blue Drgn and BlueDrgn, is a boss in Final Fantasy VI. It is one of the eight legendary dragons, and is the dragon of the Water Water element.

The Blue Dragon is found in the Ancient Castle in the World of Ruin in a secret side passage. The player must take five steps down from the right side of the throne and press the confirm button to find a secret switch to reveal a staircase in the right room leading to the basement. The Blue Dragon wanders this chamber.

The Blue Dragon is re-fought in the Dragon Temple area of the Dragons' Den bonus dungeon in the Advance and 2014 releases. Both versions of the Blue Dragon can be further re-fought in the Soul Shrine, as with most bosses in the game.

Battle[]

First battle[]

The Blue Dragon attacks by using Acid Rain, Flash Rain, and Tsunami. Acid Rain can be particularly dangerous because it gives the party the sap status. If any party members have haste, Blue Dragon will cast Slow on itself and use Rippler to exchange its status with a party member's. The easiest way to avoid this is to not cast Haste. Rippler exchanges all statuses, positive and negative, but the Blue Dragon's AI script only checks for Haste status to determine if it will use Rippler.

It is thus dangerous to bring Shadow to this fight, or to Trance Terra, since both Trance and Interceptor count as invisible statuses, and due to the Rippler bug these statuses will be transferred to the Blue Dragon. In the case of Interceptor, unless Rippler is used to transfer it back to the party before killing the Blue Dragon, Interceptor will be lost and will no longer block attacks for Shadow.

the Blue Dragon is weak against Lightning Lightning.

Strategy[]

Thundaga spells are useful, as are other powerful spells, such as Flare and Ultima. The player should not use Haste.

Second battle[]

In the Dragons' Den, the Blue Dragon is mostly the same as before, only with higher stats. It can take two turns at once and still uses Water-elemental attacks. The Rippler AI script functions differently: Blue Dragon will use Rippler on any party member with haste, protect, or shell, and will inflict Poison Poison, slow, and Darkness Darkness on itself before using Rippler. Its special attack, Blue Fang, can inflict stop on a character.

Slaying the Blue Dragon gives the player Celes's ultimate weapon, Save the Queen, and shatters the Seal of Water blocking certain areas of the dungeon.

Strategy[]

Spells such as Thundaga, Flare, and Ultima help defeat the Blue Dragon. It is best to avoid using spells such as Haste or Shell, or the Blue Dragon will cast status effects on itself and use Rippler to transfer them to the buffed character.

Behind the scenes[]

In versions of Final Fantasy VI that feature the Dragons' Den, the Blue Dragon uses a different palette for its field sprite than it does when encountered in the Ancient Castle—in the Ancient Castle it has a blue body with yellow wings and stomach, but in Dragons' Den it has a purple body with pink wings and stomach in the GBA release and a blue body with purple wings and stomach in the 2014 release. The purple and pink palette exists for the generic "dragon" sprite in the SNES release, but is not used for any of the eight dragons. The Pixel Remaster port acts as a combination of its two GBA sprites, with a purple body and yellow wings and stomach.

Etymology[]

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Chromatic dragon is a classification of dragon in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons who are typically of evil alignment, in contrast to the metallic dragons, and their queen is Tiamat. White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Blue dragons are the second-most powerful of the classic chromatic dragons. They excel in aerial combat, discharge lightning, are powerful at spell craft and adept at burrowing in sand.
