The Big Bridge is a location in Final Fantasy V on the second and third worlds, though only accessible in the second world, as it serves as a passage between the mainland and the Island Shrine in the third world.
After Galuf breaks his friends out of Castle Exdeath they cross the Big Bridge teeming with monsters. Halfway, Gilgamesh attacks them, casts support spells on himself as a last resort, but loses regardless and runs off. Unfortunately, Exdeath activates the Barrier Towers before they could reach the other side, which sends them all the way to Gloceana.
After the skirmish enemies stop appearing on the bridge and in the Merged World it appears right where the Island Shrine is, allowing the party to enter.
The background musical theme that plays in the Big Bridge is "Clash on the Big Bridge", which became Gilgamesh's personal theme. This tune plays continuously within the Big Bridge, including in any battle fought inside.
Big Bridge is inspired by Gojō Bridge in Kyoto, Japan, where the warrior monk Benkei defeated and disarmed every passing swordsman, eventually collecting 999 swords. On his 1,000th duel, Benkei was defeated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune.
