Benjamin, also known as Zash, is the hero and main protagonist of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Benjamin's home is destroyed at the start of the game, and is sent on a quest by the Crystal of Light to save the world from the Dark King. Benjamin's coming is foretold by an ancient prophecy, which states that when the Vile Four divide the world, a knight to oppose them will appear. Benjamin is this knight.
Benjamin is guided by the Crystal of Light, disguised as a human, throughout the game, and has four allies: Kaeli, Tristam, Phoebe, and Reuben, though only one of them can help him at a time. Benjamin's personality is that of a simple-minded, adventurous youth with a tendency to be silly when no one is looking. When he wakes up from sleeping at an Inn, for instance, he flexes his muscles.
Benjamin's name is not explicitly canon; it is merely used in the American manual in an introductory paragraph outlining the game's plot, and the game makes the player insert a name of their own choosing. If the game is left to run on its own without player input, a demo will begin, in which the character has "DemoPlay" as his entered name. In the Japanese version's manual, the character is described using the term "Protagonist".

Benjamin has access to every piece of equipment available in the game, outside of character-specific equipment. The most powerful armors are automatically equipped as they're purchased and encountered, and players can cycle through the strongest available weapons in each category.
