[view·edit·purge]In Dante's Divine Comedy, Inferno has twelve demons employed in pushing barrators under the surface of boiling pitch. One of them is Malacoda, called Belzecue in English. Unlike other characters that are based on mythical characters, Malacoda was invented by Dante and is not a mythological reference.
The enemy is called Garm in the SNES version. [view·edit·purge]In Norse mythology, Garm is a dog associated with both Hel and Ragnarök, and described as a blood-stained watchdog that guards Hel's gate.
