The Basilisk, also known as the SAURIA in the NES version, is an enemy in the original Final Fantasy. They appear as a random encounters on the Cardia Islands, a chain most associated with dragons. Basilisks appear on the island that contains Bahamut's throne. Later, they appear in Chaos Shrine, on floor B1, as a rare encounter. In the PlayStation, GBA, and PSP/mobile versions, they do not appear in the Bahamut Islands, but are found in the island of the Citadel of Trials.

Etymology[]
Basilisk is a fictional beast that appeared in medieval bestiaries, it is said that a single gaze to their eyes would kill or petrify the observer. It was supposed to appear when a chicken's egg was hatched by a snake or a frog (hence their reptilian appearance).
TheIn the NES version, the Basilisk was called Sauria. Sauria derives from saura, which means "reptile" in Greek.
