FFIX Bad Breath

Bad Breath in Final Fantasy IX.

Belch forth putrid stench to inflict status ailments.

Bad Breath ((くさ)い息, Kusai Iki?), also known as Breath or Sour Mouth, is an enemy ability in Final Fantasy series used by the recurring Malboro enemies. In most games the attack can be learned as Blue Magic. It inflicts multiple, if not all possible ailments simultaneously, occasionally with a small amount of non-ailment related damage.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy II[]

Bad Breath is used by Rhyos and Chimera Sphinx, which appear in the Jade Passage. Instead of inflicting multiple statuses, Bad Breath merely inflicts Petrify on the party.

Final Fantasy III[]

Bad Breath is used only by the Cloud of Darkness in the 3D remake. It inflicts a party member with multiple statuses.

Final Fantasy IV[]

The Malboro (2D and 3D) use Breath as their opening attack. It inflicts one party member with Confuse, Toad, Mini, Pig, Silence, and Blind. If the target is immune to at least one of the above statuses, no statuses will be inflicted. The Great Malboro and Lunasaur (2D and 3D) can also use Bad Breath, the latter's affecting the entire party.

Final Fantasy VI[]

Spews foul breath that inflicts various status ailments on enemies.

Description

The Malboro and Great Malboro use Bad Breath when left alone. Strago can learn it as a Lore. It inflicts a party member with Darkness Darkness, Poison Poison, sap, Imp Imp, silence, and confuse. It costs 32 MP to cast and has a 100 hit rate. It can be learned from Dark Force, Great Malboro, and Malboro.

Final Fantasy VII[]

FFVII Bad Breath

Bad Breath is an enemy ability used by the Malboro enemy. It casts Poison, Confusion, Sleep, Silence, Frog, and Small on all party members. An unprepared party may find this difficult to survive. A Malboro will only use it three times in a battle.

Bad Breath can be learned on the Enemy Skill Materia. Malboro can only be fought in two locations: on Gaea's Cliff and inside the final dungeon. If the player does not learn Bad Breath at Gaea's Cliff, it cannot be obtained until the end of the game since Gaea's Cliff is an unrevisitable location. With all its effects, Bad Breath can render most enemies defenseless, but does not work on bosses. The MP cost is 58.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Bad Breath from FFVII Remake

Bad Breath is an Enemy Skill Materia Enemy Skill Materia learned from the malboro, in the "Three-Person Team vs. Monsters of Legend" battle in the Shinra Combat Simulator. When used from the Enemy Skill materia, it inflicts Poison Poison, Sleep Sleep, and Silence Silence on all enemies, though when used by a malboro, it also inflicts Toad Toad.

Malboro uses Bad Breath from FFVIII Remastered

Malboro uses Bad Breath.

Malboros usually always use it as their first move, and their version inflicts Poison, Darkness, Silence, Sleep, Slow, Confuse, Berserk, Petrifying, and Curse. Among the best defense against it is equipping a Guardian Force with the StatDefx4 ability and junctioning Pain, Confuse, Berserk, and Sleep, leaving only Slow and Petrifying. An alternative is to replace Berserk with Break and allow the berserk character to attack the Malboro. With Auto-Haste equipped, Slow won't afflict the character.

The Geezard also has an attack called Bad Breath, but it is not the same as the Malboro's version. It deals minor damage and may inflict Slow.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Bad Breath is an enemy ability used by the Malboro that inflicts Confuse, Poison, Darkness, Slow, and Mini to one target with a 40% base chance of the spell hitting. Quina can learn it from eating a Malboro, Anemone, or Worm Hydra. It costs 16 MP to cast.

Final Fantasy X[]

Kimahri can learn Bad Breath for his Ronso Rage by using Lancet on a Malboro or Great Malboro, the latter always opening battles with the move. It inflicts Poison, Slow, Darkness and Silence to the entire party, as well as Confusion and Berserk when used by enemies.

A more powerful version called Putrid Breath is used by the Malboro Menace fought in the Monster Arena, and deals minor damage in addition to always inflicting Confusion, Poison, Slow, Darkness (for 8 turns), and Silence (for 8 turns) to the entire party.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Bad Breath is a Blue Bullet ability learned by the Gun Mage dressphere, costing 64 MP to use. It can be learned from Malboros. Bad Breath inflicts Silence, Darkness, and Poison with 30% accuracy, Curse with 50% accuracy and Slow with 80% possibility.[1]

Great Malboros can use the more powerful Really Bad Breath, which inflicts more status effects.

Bad Breath is a Blue Magic ability learned from Morbol for the Blue Mages (level 61). It deals Earth damage that inflicts multiple status effects (Slow, Poison, Silence, Paralysis, Weight, Bind, and Blind) on enemies within a fan-shaped area originating from the caster for 212 MP. Like most breath attacks, it deals breath damage based on the blue mage's current HP (current HP/8 + Level/3) that ignores Magic Attack Bonus and Magic Defense Bonus. It costs 5 Blue Magic points to set. When set, it grants INT +2 and MND +2. It takes 8.75 seconds to cast and can be recast every 120 seconds. Because it is learned from morbols, it has monster correlation with plantoids, and is strong against beasts and weak against vermin.

Bad Breath is also an enemy ability used by the Morbol family.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Bad Breath is used by all forms of Malboro and inflicts Slow, Poison, and Blind to all targets in range.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

Blue Mages can also learn this spell from Morbols and similar enemies, though they cannot inflict Pacification, Max HP Down and Determination Down, instead inflicting Damage Dealt Reduced.
