A member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, Alphinaud was the youngest individual in history to be accepted into the Studium, Sharlayan's premier academic institution. Leaving his homeland with grand dreams of delivering the world from destruction, he has suffered many a humbling experience throughout his journey, but bolstered by comrades old and new, he forges on towards his life's goal.

Alphinaud Leveilleur [alfino ləvɛ jœʁ] is a character in Final Fantasy XIV. He and his younger twin sister, Alisaie, are the grandchildren of Louisoix Leveilleur and the children of Fourchenault and Ameliance Leveilleur. Alphinaud serves as a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in the later portions of A Realm Reborn and is one of the Warrior of Light's main companions throughout the events of subsequent expansions.

History[]

Early life[]

Alphinaud and his twin sister Alisaie were born in the Dravanian Hinterlands to Fourchenault Leveilleur, a Sharlayan dignitary and son of Louisoix Leveilleur, and his wife Ameliance. Only a year later the Sharlayan colony in Dravania was abandoned and the entire population returned to the Sharlayan motherland. Because they were so young when they left, Alphinaud and Alisaie have no memory of the Dravanian Hinterlands.

Alphinaud and his sister attended the Studium at a young age, with Alphinaud entering half a year before her, making him the youngest student to ever attend. He graduated with the highest honors and was the champion of the debate chamber. Alphinaud was popular while at the Studium, and even after graduating, the current students regarded him a legend. During his time there he practised art to impress the female students, and according to Alisaie, there was more than one occasion where a girl mistook her for her brother and asked her out.

Louisoix gave the twins grimoires before he left for Eorzea. The twins were unaware that their tomes were halves of a larger grimoire, signifying Louisoux's wish for the twins to understand each other and share a common goal.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]

Alphinaud and Alisaie Gridania Opening

Alphinaud and Alisaie in the opening cutscene.

When upon a carriage, the merchant riding with them mentioned how Alphinaud and Alisaie were not much for conversation. The siblings did not speak to the Warrior of Light until the remembrance ceremonies, where Alphinaud explained the meaning behind each Grand Company's flag. Later, the twins argued over the Grand Company leaders using the ceremony to rally their troops rather than make mention of the Warrior of Light, who was the purpose for the ceremony.

While Alisaie stormed away, Alphinaud became an active member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. After the massacre at the Waking Sands and the Scions' seeming disbandment, Alphinaud sought out Cid nan Garlond to snap him out of amnesia. He revealed his last name as Leveilleur.

After recovering Cid's airship, the Enterprise, and securing a means to fly it safely into the Howling Eye, Alphinaud accompanied the Warrior of Light and Cid to confront Garuda. They were forced to flee with the arrival of Gaius van Baelsar, an Imperial Legatus. Alphinaud worked with the rescued Scions to take down the Imperial invasion force and their Ultima Weapon. After Gaius's defeat, various Eorzean organizations sought out their group. Alphinaud suggested to Minfilia Warde they move the Scions' headquarters from Ul'dah to Mor Dhona for a neutral position.

Learning of Alisaie's venture into the Coils of Bahamut, Alphinaud accompanied her to the Second Coil of Bahamut, his sister unaware of his presence. When Alisaie was about to enter the Final Coil of Bahamut, Alphinaud joined her and the Warrior of Light. They confronted Louisoix and witnessed his transformation into the primal Phoenix. After its defeat, they reunited with a now freed Louisoix who told them the truth about the Calamity, and that the realm's prayers along with the remaining aether after the failed attempt to hold Bahamut had enabled him to become the god of rebirth. Alphinaud and Alisaie received the last of this power from their grandsire before he earned his final rest, the former helping his sister by creating a barrier to shield them from the primal's attack. The twins combined their grimoire so the Warrior of Light and his party could enter the heart of Bahamut to shut it down. In their moment of victory, Alphinaud admitted to having known the truth of Louisoux's fate from deduction, and had joined the expedition to spare his sister from their grandfather's fate.

Alphinaud, sympathizing with Yugiri Mistwalker's plight, arranged humanitarian aid for the Doman refugees with Momodi Modi while granting Yugiri an audience with sultana Nanamo Ul Namo and the Syndicate to plead her case.[2] The Syndicate voted against granting the refugees asylum in Ul'dah, and Alphinaud suggested relocating the Domans to Revenant's Toll in Mor Dhona. Finding himself caught in the series of riots[3], Alphinaud asked the Warrior of Light to help him conduct a private investigation. This led to Alphinaud learning from Raubahn Aldynn and Nanamo that the riots were instigated by Teledji Adeledji, who wanted the Carteneau Reclamation Bill to obtain the Allagan superweapon Omega. Alphinaud later told the Warrior of Light he understood why his grandfather sacrificed himself for Eorzea, and vowed to continue Louisoix's legacy. To better face the emerging threats to the realm, he started a new independent Grand Company affiliated only with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn: the Crystal Braves.

What Alphinaud failed to foresee was that a majority of the Crystal Braves were financed by Teledji's Mirage Trust through proxies, and that the Monetarists' bribes swayed most members to their side. By the time Alphinaud learned the truth[4], he found himself betrayed by the Crystal Braves and accused alongside his fellow Scions of the sunlatana's assassination. With Raubahn holding off their pursuers, only Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light escaped Ul'dah with the aid of Raubahn's son, Pipin Tarupin, and an escape provided by Alisaie.

They met up with Cid who carried them to Camp Dragonhead in Coerthas on the Enterprise where they would be out of the other city-states' jurisdiction. They met up with Tataru Taru, the only other known Scion able to escape the Crystal Braves' betrayal. Alphinaud was devastated, his arrogance and belief of shouldering Eorzea's safety resulting in this disaster. Talking to Tataru improved his mood, and he resolved to work for the future alongside the Warrior of Light as he accompanied them to Ishgard.

FFXIV HW Alphinaud Ishgard

Alphinaud arriving in Ishgard.

Though Alphinaud considered returning to Ul'dah to deal with the accusations held against him and the other Scions over Nanamo's death, Haurchefant Greystone convinced him to travel to Ishgard with the Warrior of Light and be welcomed into the home of Count Edmont de Fortemps. While the Warrior of Light was off on a mission for House Fortemps, Ser Grinnaux de Dzemael arrested Alphinaud and Tataru while attempting to learn of their friends' whereabouts on the charge of consorting with heretics. When the Warrior of Light returned they aided Alphinaud in winning his and Tataru's freedom via trial by combat.

When the Warrior of Light returned to reveal Thordan VII's meeting with Ascians, Alphinaud learned from Tataru that Raubahn was to be executed. Curious as to why it had not already happened, Alphinaud traveled to Limsa Lominsa. He heard from Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn more of what occurred in Ul'dah since the sultana's death, and how the Crystal Braves had taken Raubahn to Halatali. Alphinaud accompanied the Warrior of Light and Yugiri to rescue him while forced to let the Crystal Braves escape. After resolving matters, deciding to officially disband the Crystal Braves with the remaining loyal members still intent to aid him, Alphinaud learned that Nidhogg's forces were going to attack Ishgard. He convinced Aymeric de Borel to not cause a sortie with the dragons, as he, the Warrior of Light, and Estinien Wyrmblood sought Ysayle Dangoulain's aid to broker a treaty with the dragons via Hraesvelgr. When Hraesvelgr expressed no interest, Alphinaud learned the full history of the legend of Lady Shiva and how the Dragonsong War truly began.

After returning to Ishgard, Alphinaud assisted in the plan to free Ser Aymeric de Borel who had been arrested after confronting Archbishop Thordan VII with the truth of Ishgard's past. Fighting alongside Lord Haurchefant and the Warrior, Alphinaud could not stop the Archbishop from escaping Ishgard and Haurchefant was ambushed by the Heavens' Ward. Alphinaud tried but failed to heal Haurchefant's wounds, and he died soon after [note 1]. After mourning, Alphinaud pursued Thordan alongside the Warrior of Light, Cid, and Biggs and Wedge. When they battled the primal Bismarck, Alphinaud could not participate directly, but assisted the Garlond Ironworks team about the Enterprise. Though the team defeated the primal, the Archbishop took the key to Azys Lla.

Needing to find another way to reach Azys Lla, Alphinaud accompanied the Warrior of Light and Y'shtola Rhul to meet with Matoya. He was impressed by her knowledge, though miffed she initially mistook him for his sister. After gaining the information they needed, the trio, joined by Estinien, traveled to Azys Lla where the Garlean Empire's VIth Legion met them and they battled the Imperial Legatus Regula van Hydrus. Alphinaud stayed behind with Estinien and Y'shtola to hold off the Garlean forces so that the Warrior of Light could continue on to confront the Archbishop.

After the Archbishop's defeat Alphinaud joined the Warrior of Light and Tataru at honoring Lord Haurchefant at his grave, and was found in Fortemps Manor where he discussed the groups' goals of locating the rest of the Scions and potentially freeing Estinien from the dragon Nidhogg's control. As Nidhogg prepared for a final assault against Ishgard, Alphinaud resolved to free Estinien even at the cost of his own life. He accompanied Aymeric and the Warrior of Light to appeal to Hraesvelgr for aid. Though he initially refused, Hraesvelgr was persuaded to test the three and set forth a trial for each. While the Warrior of Light battled Hraesvelgr himself, Alphinaud was challenged by Vidofnir. Satisfied with the results Hraesvelgr agreed to help, traveling to Ishgard with the group.

After Nidhogg was defeated Estinien was able to briefly regain control of his body. Estinien asked for the Warrior of Light and Alphinaud to kill him while they had the chance, but they instead attempted to pry Nidhogg's eyes from Estinien's body. Assisted by Haurchefant and Ysayle's spirits, they succeeded, freeing Estinien and destroying Nidhogg for good. While Estinien recovered Alphinaud stayed by his bedside with Aymeric guessing that Alphinaud saw Estinien as the older brother he wished he had. With the Dragonsong War finally over, Alphinaud met with the Warrior of Light and Tataru in Fortemps Manor, stating that they could now focus on stopping the Ascians' machinations.

Alphinaud was reunited with Alisaie, who had been injured in a confrontation with the Warriors of Darkness. Upon learning from his sister that the Warriors planned on allowing the Ixal to summon Garuda, he journeyed with the Warrior of Light to Xelphatol to thwart them. After defeating the Ixal, he and Alisaie joined the Warrior of Light in pursuing the Warriors of Darkness, confronting Titan and investigating the Ala Mhigan Resistance in the process. Finally catching up to the Warriors of Darkness in the Bowl of Embers, Alphinaud battled them alongside the Warrior of Light, Alisaie, Thancred Waters, and Urianger Augurelt.

Alphinaud returned to the Rising Stones with the other Scions. Though he was the de facto leader of the group, he insisted the others view him as a comrade.

M'naago, an injured Ala Mhighan Resistance member, showed up in the Rising Stones to warn Yda and the Scions of a dangerous new plan by the Griffin to launch an attack on Baelsar's Wall. Alphinaud contacted the Eorzean Alliance leaders and arranged an emergency meeting. Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, and Yugiri's shinobi agreed to reinforce the Black Shroud in case the conflict spilled over to the Twelveswood. Yda, Papalymo, and Yugiri infiltrated underground tunnels to reason with the Griffin, while Alphinaud, Hilda, and the Warrior of Light stood watch.

When the attack began on the wall by fighters wearing Grand Company uniforms, Alphinaud realized it was a trap to incite hostilities between the Garlean Empire and the Eorzean Alliance. He rushed to warn the other Scions while the Warrior of Light climbed the Wall. Alphinaud, Yugiri, and the others caught up as the Warrior of Light bested the Griffin who revealed himself to be Ilberd Feare. Ilberd refused to listen to Alphinaud's pleas to call off the operation and the Scions looked on with horror as Imperial war machines slaughtered the Resistance members. Ilberd revealed he had the Eyes of Nidhogg and planned to summon a primal with them.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood[]

When the Eorzean Alliance made contact with the Ala Mhigan Resistance, Alphinaud traveled to Rhalgr's Reach alongside the Warrior of Light and the other Scions, and was present when Zenos yae Galvus, the crown prince of Garlemald, attacked the base. After this crushing defeat the Scions traveled to Othard to assist in the liberation of Doma, hoping to disrupt Zenos's forces. Alphinaud traveled to Kugane with the Warrior of Light, Alisaie, Tataru, and Lyse, and stayed in the city with Tataru to gather information while the other Scions journeyed to the Ruby Sea and beyond. He rejoined the others at the headquarters of the Doman resistance where he came up with the strategy to retake Doma Castle and expel the Garlean occupation.

FFXIV Alphinaud healing Alisaie

Alphinaud healing his sister.

After Doma was liberated, the Scions returned to Eorzea where Alphinaud was distraught to learn the Empire had captured Krile. He continued to work with the Warrior of Light and their allies as they pushed towards Ala Mhigo. After Alisaie was injured during the battle for Castrum Abania, Alphinaud promised to fight for the both of them. As the Eorzean Alliance prepared to lay siege to Ala Mhigo, Alphinaud fought alongside the Warrior of Light to rescue Krile from the research laboratory. He convinced the Lupin conscripts the Empire was using to switch sides after defeating their leader and revealed a new power in the form of a Moonstone Carbuncle.

Once Zenos was defeated, and Ala Mhigo freed from Garlean occupation, Alphinaud celebrated with the other Scions, and was present when Lyse announced her resignation to continue leading the Ala Mhigan forces. To acquire funds for the reconstruction of Ala Mhigo, Alphinaud teamed up with the Warrior of Light and Arenvald Lentinus to find the kingdom's lost treasures hidden in the Drowned City of Skalla.

After learning that Zenos was still alive in Garlemald, and suspecting Ascian involvement, Alphinaud traveled to the Imperial capital to investigate. He gained passage to Garlemald with a politically moderate Imperial commander, but along the way unidentified Imperial troops downed their airship. Alphinaud was forced to fight off waves of Imperials before a mysterious man calling himself "Shadowhunter" assisted him, indicating he was familiar with Alphinaud and the Scions. The "Shadowhunter" declared that his group's only goal was to eradicate the Ascians. Left with few other options, Alphinaud followed the Shadowhunter and his teammates from the battlefield.

FFXIV Alphinaud and Shadowhunter

Alphinaud and Shadowhunter at an outpost.

Continuing toward Garlemald, Shadowhunter, Alphinaud and their companions stopped at an outpost where they found numerous people killed by an experimental Garlean chemical weapon named Black Rose, a gas that instantly kills anyone that breathes it in. The Shadowhunter berated the Garleans for using technology he thought abandoned before conceding that it was likely Ascian involvement. The Shadowhunter was revealed to be Gaius van Baelsar, and together with him, Alphinaud infiltrates the Imperial facility where the Black Rose was being produced, destroying its current supplies. They also discovered a facility where clones of Solus zos Galvus (the former emperor and founding father of Garlemald) were being created. Alphinaud fell victim to the same ailment affecting other Scions, and entered a state of unconsciousness. Gaius took Alphinaud's comatose body to the border of Doma to return him to the Scions' care.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers[]

The cause of the Scions' affliction was Crystal Exarch's prior attempts to bring the Warrior of Light to the First, instead bringing their closest allies. Though their physical bodies were left behind on the Source, their souls created corporeal bodies on the First. As time flows differently between the Source and the First, Alphinaud had been on the First for a year prior to the Warrior of Light's arrival.

After arriving on the First, the Warrior of Light reunited with Alphinaud, who had been in the region of Kholusia investigating the city of Eulmore. By posing as an artist under the patronage of Dulia-Chai and her husband Chai-Nuzz, Alphinaud gained access to the city. He drew the ire of its leader, Vauthry, and departed. When the Warrior of Light was given the new role as the Warrior of Darkness, Alphinaud assisted them in finding and defeating the Lightwardens in the regions of Lakeland and Il Mheg alongside the other Scions. After Titania's defeat, the group split up to locate the remaining Lightwardens, with Alphinaud returning to Kholusia to investigate.

He failed to gain any additional information on the location of Kholusia's Lightwarden and regrouped with the Scions in the Crystarium in time to help defend Lakeland from an attack by Vauthry's sin eaters. The group later defeated the Lightwarden of Amh Araeng before returning to Eulmore to drive Vauthry, revealed to be a Lightwarden, from the city. The Scions traveled to The Tempest to confront Emet-Selch, one of the Ascian leaders whose previous host body had been that of Emperor Solus. Alphinaud and the other Scions used White Auracite to contain Emet-Selch, allowing the Warrior of Darkness to kill him. Afterward, Alphinaud returned to Eulmore with Lord and Lady Chai to complete the portrait they had commissioned from him.

Alphinaud returned to the Crystarium when the Crystal Exarch sent word that he had new information regarding sending the Scions back to the Source. He traveled with the Scions to the palace known as the Grand Cosmos to request the aid of Beq Lugg, a Nu mou expert on souls. The group passed Beq Lugg's trials and gained his cooperation. Alphinaud traveled to The Inn at Journey's Head with Alisaie, Beq Lugg, and the Warrior of Light to help the patients residing there and received an urgent request from Dulia-Chai, asking him to return to Eulmore.

When Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light arrived at Eulmore, Dulia-Chai explained that Chai-Nuzz disappeared shortly after being elected mayor. She feared the pressure of the position caused him to flee, and asked that Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light find him. They discovered that Chai-Nuzz had left to gain the information and help needed to effectively lead Eulmore. They returned to Eulmore with him, where they witnessed him accept the mayorship and give a rousing speech about the city's future. Satisfied that Eulmore was in good hands, Alphinaud departed with the Warrior of Light. When Elidibus began to enact his final plan, taking over the Crystal Tower and summoning the shades of Warriors of Light from other worlds, Alphinaud and the other Scions helped the Warrior of Light/Darkness battle their way to the Crystarium to confront him. After Elidibus's defeat, Alphinaud returned to his body on the Source.

Shortly after returning, the rogue Ascian Fandaniel apprehended the Scions, arriving alongside a Lunar Bahamut. Fandaniel declared his intent to destroy all life on the planet, and erected mysterious towers throughout Eorzea that tempered those that approached them. Alphinaud reunited with Arenvald when the latter was sent alongside Fordola to investigate one of these towers, as well as Estinien, who had arrived per the Scions' request for aid in dealing with Lunar Bahamut. On Estinien's advice, the Scions traveled to Azys Lla to convince the dragon Tiamat to help them. They freed her from her tempering, and with Tiamat's aid, Alphinaud and the other Scions defeated Lunar Bahamut, who had been attacking the Amalj'aa. Alphinaud was devastated to learn that Arenvald had been injured during his mission and was in critical condition. Alphinaud was present when Estinien, on suggestion from Krile, agreed to join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.

The Eorzean Alliance requested an alliance with Sharlayan to face the current threat. To Alphinaud and Alisaie's surprise, their father, Fourchenault Leveilleur, traveled to Gridania to personally deliver the answer. To their dismay, he not only declared that Sharlayan would not help, but also denounced his children's actions, declaring them to no longer be members of the Leveilleur family. After his departure, word arrived that Fandaniel's Telophoroi forces, including a number of Lunar Primals, had converged at the Carteneau Flats. Before departing, Alphinaud met Arenvald confined to a wheelchair, likely for the rest of his life. Arenvald gave words of encouragement asking Alphinaud to become the hero that he could no longer be. Alphinaud and the Scions traveled to Carteneau, driving off the Telophoroi and defeating the Lunar Primals. After returning to the Rising Stones, it was agreed that if they were to find any clues to unravel Fandaniel's plans and possibly learn more about Hydaelyn, the goddess their world was named after, the Scions were to travel to Sharlayan and possibly discover any evidence to the suspicion the Forum was withholding knowledge of the Final Days.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

The Scions traveled to Sharlayan under the purpose of restoring the Students of Baldesion with Krile to learn about the Final Days. When Alphinaud and his sister went through the immigration process they discovered that word of Fourchenault disowning his children had spread, much to their dismay. He joined the party on an excursion to Labyrinthos, learning that the Forum had made extensive orders of the Gleaners to bring various amounts of products and materials. Fourchenault confronted him and accused the Scions hindering Sharlayan's effort in battling the Final Days. Fourchenault brought the Scions for a questioning in the Forum, wanting them to be expelled from Sharlayan, but the Scions got off with only a warning to not investigate further. Later, Alphinaud and Alisaie were warmly greeted by their mother, Ameliance Leveilleur, and brought home to Leveilleur Estate. There, Ameliance gifted Alphinaud a new attire, his father's nouliths, and a Sage soul crystal. She informed the twins that their father had thrown himself into his work not long after they were born and that the best way to get through to him was to have him see the effects of their actions after the could no longer be undone.

Alphinaud later joined the advancing Scions at the Tower of Zot. Following their victory at the tower, the great wyrm Vrtra thanked them from their service to Thavnair and gifted them with a large supply of warding scales to protect people from tempering. After returning to Sharlayan, Alphinaud, Alisaie, the Warrior and Estinien met with Kan-E-Senna, Admiral Merlwyb and Nanamo Ul Namo at Limsa Lominsa. The three women wanted the Scions to join the Ilsabard contingent, a joint operation of both the Grand Company of Eorzea and Eastern Alliance to journey to Garlemald to take out the Telophoroi's base of operations and provide assistance to any surviving Garleans. Alphinaud accepted the proposal, and they met the contingent forces in Ala Mhigo, which consisted many of the comrades the Scions had made throughout their journey.

After clearing a path through Magna Glacies and establishing Camp Broken Glass, Lucia had Alphinaud, Alisaie and the Warrior search Eblan Rime for survivors. When Emmanallain de Fortemps spotted a girl, the Warrior tailed her with Alphinaud and Alisaie following behind. They assured her they were there to help. The girl, named Licinia, was wary, but allowed them to help out. However, they soon discovered she had a sister, who was deathly ill, and that Licinia had been keeping a radio close ever since the terrible tower appeared. Licinia sent the Warrior and Alisaie to get ceruleum, but as soon as they left, the other surviving Garleans assaulted Alphinaud, so that Licinia and her sister could escape from him. Alphinaud was able to subdue them without killing anyone, and the Warrior and Alisaie went after Licinia. Unfortunately, they found her and her sister dead on the other edge of a frozen lake. Alphinaud decided to do the honorable thing and the sisters were buried.

The twins and the Warrior returned to Camp Broken Glass, and reported what happened. Maxima had been questioning his former collegues, that were captured at Magna Glacies and learned a lot about what had been going on in Garlemald, from since Elidibus took over Zenos' corpse to the moment the Telophoroi were tempered. While Elidibus was manipulating events from the scenes, Fandaniel had been using the guise of Asahi sas Brutus to direct funds to the Ist and IIIrd legions to maximize the chaos within the civil war. The war abruptly ended, when a scream was heard all throughout the capital. Afterwards, none of the cured populares had any memories. Alphinaud and Alisaie remember Licinia keeping her radio close, when the scream occurred. They showed the radio, and Y'shtola and A-Ruhn-Senna determined the aetherial composition within the ore used in it, was similar to the aetherial composition of the warding scales. From this Y'shtola was able to determine, that the scream was made by a primal, and while most of the people were tempered, anyone within close proximity to a radio were spared.

Cirina Mol then ran in and informed that Magnai had subdued a young Garlean trying to steal their supplies. Alphinaud felt, they needed to question him. The young man was Jullus Orbanus from the Ist Legion. He was disgusted to see Garleans consorting with Eorzeans, but Lucia told him they were willing to share their supplies with him and his comrades. Jullus claimed, that they don't need help, and that his commander will decide their fates. He allowed a delegation of three to accompany him. While Y'shtola and A-Ruhn were willing, Alphinaud and Alisaie volunteered in their stead, and Lucia asked the Warrior to serve as escort. Jullus was yet again disgusted for having a delegation consisting of two children and sellsword, but he allowed it.

Jullus led the twings and the Warrior to Tertium, where they met with Quintus van Cinna, commander of the Ist Legion. While Alphinaud and Alisaie tried to plead their case, Quintus was unwilling to accept their help, believing they will have the manpower to assault the tower as soon as the Xth legion joins them. Nevertheless he allowed the three to move freely in th eTertium, as long as they behave. To ensure this he ordered shock collars to be installed on Alphinaud and Alisaie. The Warrior didn't receive one, knowing that they were the champion of Eorzea. Quintus left the three under Jullus' supervision.

With Jullus, the three set out to find ceruleum from the ruined city. The Warrior was able to find some, thinking it was for heating. But as soon as they returned, Alphinaud and Alisaie were taken hostage. The ceruleum was to be used for warmachinas instead. Quintus ordered Jullus to escort the Warrior back to camp Broken Glass. Alphinaud and Alisaie remained within a storage container huddled together for warmth, until Estinien arrived to let them free. They then tried to go see Quintus, only to find him dead, after he received the news his reinforcements weren't coming, and in his pride, he committed suicide.

The contingent then escorted any of the willing Garleans to camp Broken Glass, where their lifelong enemies treated with kindness, something they had never seen. Suddenly, a tremor happened and anyone without a warding scale was being tempered. The contingent quickly moved to subdue the Garleans in order to treat them, while the Warrior vanished in the chaos. Alphinaud and Alisaie were worried about them, but were relieved, when they saw them coming. However, when Alisaie and G'raha addressed them, they saw something was off. Indeed, as it was actually Zenos using the Warrior's body to torment them by attacking their friends, but the Warrior, in a body of Garlean soldier, managed to intervene right on time.

When the Warrior got their body back, the contingent decided to assault the Tower of Babil. The Warrior also revealed that the primal within the tower was called Anima, and that it was created from the corpse emperor Varis. The Scions joined the infiltration team, and within the tower's heart they slew Anima, and Alphinaud wished Varis' spirit finds peace.

The Scions then encountered Zenos and Fandaniel, and learned the Tower's ultimate purpose: to fire a beam of concentrated aether to undo Zodiark's bindings on the moon. All of sudden, Hydaelyn arrived with Krile's body. Fandaniel fired the beam, but it was only able to destroy five out of the six seals. Fandaniel then calimed he and Zenos deal with the final binding personally, and used the tower's teleportation device to travel to the moon. However, Hydaelyn manipulated the devices aether flow to send them far from their destination. The Warrior gave chase while the other Scions remained behind to subdue the remaining Telophoroi, since Anima's death gave them one final order to destroy everything and everyone. Alphinaud remained in Garlemald, while Y'shtola, Thancred and Urianger joined the Warrior on the moon.

When the Warrior returned with Y'shtola, Thancred and Urianger, they gave a report about what happened there. Zodiark was destroyed by Fandaniel, which was his ultimate goal all along, as his death will bring forth the Final Days. They also reported that the moon was created by Hydaelyn to serve as an escape vessel in the event the Final Days should return, and that the Sharlayan Forum had been corroborating with its crew for just this occasion. The Scions returned to Sharlayan just in time to hear Forum's announcement about the Final Days, and that heir evacuation plan was spearheaded by Fourchenault. After the announcement, Alphinaud and Alisaie spoke with him. While the twins understood nature of their father's work, they were unwilling to just simply abandon all the people and lands of the star, believing there is another way to save everyone from the Final Days. Fourchenault made no effort to dissuade them, only that they stay out of the Forum's way.

The next day, Krile called the Scions about bad news from Thavnair. The skies had begun to burn and monsters had appeared all over. Without hesitation, the Scions traveled to Thavnair to witness the Final Days taking form. Ahewann greeted them in Yehdlimad and Alphinaud asked him about the situation. He told them, that last night terrible tremors were experienced and the skies began to burn. Vile beasts emerged as well, and he was pained to admit that these beasts were transformed from ordinary Thavnairian citizens. He asked the Scions aid and Alphinaud gave it.

The Scions tarveled to Vanaspati to help Vrtra and people there and they encountered and defeated the strongest blasphemy. Y'shtola was horrified, because the creature had been all but stripped from its aether; she saw nothing but emptiness. The Scions then returned to Radz-at-Han to ascertain the events that took place as the blasphemies first appeared. Alphinaud and Alisaie questioned the citizens, and after finishing their inquiries, they compared notes with others. From this, they determined that every blasphemy had prior to the transformation succumbed to different negative emotional state, such as fear, unease and despair. However, there was a difference regarding the modern people to that of the ancients, which Alphinaud pointed out; while the Final Days of the ancient world saw their creation magicks going out of control due to terror and twisting them into creating their deepest horrors, this time the people themselves transformed. Alphinaud theorized this may be due to the fact that modern people's souls are sundered while the ancients' weren't.

Following the aversion of the Final Days, Alphinaud is joined by his sister in a journey to Garlemald to assist the people with reconstruction and help them avoid being preyed upon by political agenda, a similar position he held when neogitiating on the Ala Mhigans behalf against Ul'dah and Lord Lolorito.

Appearance[]

Alphinaud from Final Fantasy XIV ARR render

Render of Alphinaud in A Realm Reborn.

Alphinaud is a sixteen-year-old Elezen with white hair. He and his sister have yet to reach their final growth spurt, so they are considerably shorter than adult Elezen. He wears a large delta-shaped earring on his left ear and dark blue clothing that matches his sister's. He has a blue knot on his ponytail and green markings on his collar. He seems to be an Arcanist, as he wields a black grimoire. During Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, at Tataru Taru's behest, Alphinaud wears a white tunic with matching pants and boots, a blue coat with black hood and black gloves. He also has a Ruby Carbuncle companion.

The most distinct feature Alphinaud has from his sister, aside from the color of their ponytail and collar markings, is the color of their lips. Alisaie's are redder, being female and possibly wearing lipstick. The duo become more distinctive in Heavensward once Tataru provides them with new outfits.

In Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, Alphinaud is seventeen years old and is given a new outfit that resembles the one he was given in Heavensward, only simplified and more armored and his iconic Arcanist tome changes to a wooden tome. After his journey in the First, Alphinaud returns to his Heavensward outfit.

In Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, Alphinaud dons a new outfit with his job change into a Sage, wearing a custom version of the relic armor dyed his usual shades of blue.

Personality[]

FFXIV SH Alphinaud 2

Alphinaud in Shadowbringers.

Alphinaud is a self-assured young man, calm and mature for his age. He shows more interest in intervening in Eorzean events than his sister, who prefers to watch history unfold from the shadow. Charismatic and diplomatic, he finds it easy to gain the Eorzean Alliance leaders' trust, partly thanks to his grandfather's credit. Alphinaud has a big ego, and often clashes with other nations' leaders about their ideals. Alphinaud listens and partakes in gossip. Alphinaud is arguably the most politically savvy Scion, or at the very least the most interested in engaging in politics. His skill at political negotiations have been useful in advancing the Scions' agenda.

Initially Alphinaud participates in Eorzea's affairs with his own agenda: to discover what happened to his grandfather and finish what he started to test his potential and prove himself. As he spends more time with the Scions, he comes understand why his grandfather sacrificed so much for the realm, and resolves to follow in his footsteps. Compared to his sister, Alphinaud is more level-headed and can quickly get over the shock of unexpected events and reformulate his strategies. He is more selective in his diplomatic battles, recognizing that after his father disowned him and Alisaie, any further engagement would worsen the situation.

Alphinaud is not invulnerable to negative feelings, as he regrets his mistakes and overconfidence. He gets flustered whenever Krile or Alisaie threaten to regale embarrassing details from his earlier days in the Studium in front of the Warrior of Light. Alphinaud is annoyed and embarrassed for being mistaken for his sister, or a girl in general. Despite his differences with his sister, Alphinaud deeply cares about his twin and dreads losing her. He does not carry the loss or permanent injury of his comrades well, and his colleagues often have to help lift his spirits in such situations.

In Heavensward, Alphinaud comes to terms with the Crystal Braves' betrayal and of his own naivete and haughtiness, maturing during his time in Ishgard. Upon reestablishing the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, his leadership qualities come to light as its remaining members name him the guild's de facto leader, which he humbly accepts.

Though good-natured and welcoming, Alphinaud can hold a grudge if someone betrays his trust for selfish desires or harms his friends. He matures into a capable leader and crafts the plan to liberate Doma from Garlean rule, and offers to go to Garlemald as a diplomat following the successful prisoner exchange. Despite his maturity, Alphinaud has moments of being impudent as he cannot control his laughter at Gosetsu Daito being tended to by an amnesiac Yotsuyu, or with Alisaie's lackluster clay art piece. Possibly due to being raised in an affluent household, Alphinaud lacks a good sense for money and is naive in market dealings; for example, he offers to buy a Samurai sword, using the Scions' money, without checking the listed price and not knowing how expensive it truly was until some time after the purchase. However, he quickly learns from his mistake, and makes sure Ala Mhigo's Saltery reconstruction is funded as much as possible by the Ala Mhigans, wanting to reduce, if not eliminate, Lolorito's influence over the project by reducing the financial stake the Monetarist has in the project.

Gameplay[]

Battle[]

During the main scenario of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Alphinaud participates in a number of battles alongside the player. He functions as an Arcanist and can summon two unique variants of Carbuncle called Ruby and Obsidian Carbuncle. Patch 6.2 added him to Duty Support in Sohm Al Sohm Al and The Vault The Vault.

He participates in several battles during the main scenario of Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood and reveals a third type of unique Carbuncle variant, the Moonstone Carbuncle.

FFXIV Alphinaud Role-Play

Alphinaud in the Role-Play mode.

In patch 4.3 Alphinaud becomes a temporary playable character during the MSQ instance Emissary of the Dawn. He only has access to Ruin III, Physick and Tri-Shackle. Though he has no Summon command, Moonstone Carbuncle is called forth automatically to attack. The Carbuncle will also summon Shining Moonstone, independent of player control, which gives Alphinaud two minutes of increased defense and HP regen within its area of effect. His Limit Break Starstorm is also available.

Alphinaud is the first character besides the player's to be playable. Previously, characters like Nanamo Ul Namo and the three leaders of the Grand Companies were also playable in a seasonal event, but these were actually the player character fully glamorized into their appearances. Alphinaud becoming playable marks the first time in which players can play as a young Elezen, something impossible through the character customization.

In Shadowbringers, Alphinaud is one of the NPCs available to join the player in dungeons as part of the Trust System. He is a healer with the unique job of "Academician"; mechanically, this is essentially Scholar with a unique pet in the form of his Carbuncle. If both the twins are in the party during a Trust, Alphinaud will prioritize healing Alisae over the Adventurer, even if the Adventurer is the Tank.

In Endwalker, Alphinaud changes his job into Sage and could join the player in Endwalker dungeons and The Mothercrystal trial.

Etymology[]

Alphinaud is a combination of "Alvin", which in old-English means "Elf Friend", with the French augmentative suffix "-aud". Le veilleur roughly translates to "the watchman", however veilleur is used in many ways in French, like "someone that stays awake". More interestingly, veille is also used as "the action of studying the future to anticipate it", therefore a better translation to Le veilleur would be "the awaken".
